Second, the Southern Suburbs are quieter and close to Kirstenbosch. Third, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek place you among the vineyards, although Franschhoek is further from the city. Finally, Somerset West sits between the airport, the Winelands and the False Bay coast.
Each option has its own rhythm. Staying in the city means shorter drives to the sights in town; however, it also means higher prices in peak season and busier streets. A base in the Winelands, on the other hand, gives you space and quiet, but you will drive in for the city sights.
Why Somerset West is a smart base near Cape Town
Somerset West lies 33 km from Cape Town International Airport, about 25 minutes by car. As a result, you can land, collect a hire car and be at the pool within the hour. The town sits at the foot of the Helderberg mountain, so the views are wide and the evenings are calm.
Location is the real advantage. Stellenbosch is only 15 minutes away, and Franschhoek about 45 minutes. In addition, Strand Beach is an eight-minute drive, and the whale coast around Hermanus is a little over an hour away. In other words, you stay near Cape Town while the Winelands and the coast are on your doorstep.

Plan your city days outside rush hour, or simply leave early. The drive along the N2 is quick in quiet hours, so you can often reach Table Mountain before the queues build.

Somerset West is not the right base for everyone. If you are here for two or three nights and want to focus only on the city, staying in Cape Town itself saves driving time. Likewise, if you want to walk to bars and nightlife in the evening, the city centre or the Atlantic Seaboard will suit you better.
On the other hand, if your trip lasts five nights or more, or if you plan to combine the city with the Winelands, the coast and perhaps a safari, a base outside the city works very well. You avoid packing up every two days, and you return each evening to a quieter place.
Some travellers therefore split their stay: a few nights in the city first, then a longer stretch in Somerset West. That way, you get the best of both.
