Because Somerset West lies between Cape Town, the Winelands and the Whale Coast, every direction offers something new: the city and Table Mountain in under an hour, the vineyards of Stellenbosch in 15 minutes and the whales of Hermanus in just over an hour. Ride the Table Mountain cableway for panoramic views of the city and coastline, then stroll the historic V&A Waterfront. You can also visit Robben Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where former political prisoners guide you through a poignant chapter of history.
Dramatic cliffs meet the Atlantic Ocean in the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. Then hike the scenic trails, spot indigenous flora and fauna, and visit Boulders Beach, home to a colony of African penguins.
Of course, you can taste award-winning vintages amid rolling vineyards, paired with gourmet cuisine. Franschhoek is about 45 minutes away, so it is easy to combine both towns in one day.
Hermanus is world-famous for whale watching from the shore, and Clarence Drive is one of the Cape's most scenic coastal routes.
