The Cape Winelands are one of the main reasons people travel to the Western Cape. Most visitors choose between three towns as the best base in the Winelands: Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Somerset West. All three are beautiful, and all three put you among the vineyards. However, they differ a lot in atmosphere, distances and what you can do between tastings. We live in Somerset West, so we are not neutral; we have therefore tried to be fair to each town.
Choosing the best base in the Winelands
Before you compare towns, it helps to know what kind of trip you are planning. First, think about how much time you will spend in Cape Town itself. Second, decide whether beaches and the coast matter to you. Third, consider how often you want to drive.
In short, the best base for a food-focused couple is not always the best base for a family that also wants the sea. The sections below show what each town does well, and where it falls short.
Stellenbosch: the lively heart of the Winelands
Stellenbosch is a historic university town with oak-lined streets, Cape Dutch buildings and a busy café culture. As a result, it has plenty of energy, especially during term time. Dozens of wine estates lie within a short drive, and the town centre is easy to explore on foot.
Cape Town is roughly 45 minutes away by car, and the airport about half an hour. On the other hand, there is no beach nearby, and the town can feel busy at weekends. Stellenbosch suits travellers who want restaurants and nightlife within walking distance.
Franschhoek: a food lover’s base in the Winelands
Franschhoek lies in a narrow valley surrounded by mountains. It is known for its restaurants, its Huguenot history and its wine tram, which takes visitors between estates. Consequently, it is a favourite with couples and anyone who travels for food.
However, Franschhoek is the furthest of the three from the city. Cape Town is usually more than an hour away, so days at Table Mountain or Cape Point take more planning. Prices for accommodation also tend to be higher.
Somerset West: the best base for Winelands and coast
Somerset West sits at the foot of the Helderberg mountain, between the vineyards and False Bay. Stellenbosch is 15 minutes away and Franschhoek about 45 minutes, while the Helderberg estates are right on the doorstep. For examples, see our local wine estate guide.
What sets it apart is the coast. Strand Beach is an eight-minute drive, and the scenic coastal road towards Hermanus and the whale coast starts just past Gordon’s Bay. In addition, the airport is only 25 minutes away, and the centre of Cape Town about 40 minutes.
The trade-off is that Somerset West is a residential town rather than a postcard village. It has good restaurants and shops, but it is less touristy than Stellenbosch or Franschhoek. For some travellers, that is exactly the appeal.

Choose Stellenbosch if you want a lively town, walkable restaurants and many estates close by. Choose Franschhoek if food is the heart of your trip and you do not mind longer drives to the city. Choose Somerset West if you want the Winelands, the beaches and Cape Town within easy reach of one base.

Can I visit Franschhoek from Somerset West?
Yes. Franschhoek is about 45 minutes from Somerset West by car, so it makes an easy day trip. You can also combine it with a stop in Stellenbosch on the way.
Is Stellenbosch or Somerset West closer to the airport?
Somerset West is slightly closer: Cape Town International Airport is 33 km away, about 25 minutes by car. From Stellenbosch, the drive usually takes around half an hour.
Where should I stay for wine tasting?
All three towns are surrounded by estates. Stellenbosch has the largest choice, Franschhoek the best-known restaurants, and Somerset West the Helderberg estates plus easy access to both other towns.
Can I explore the Winelands without a car?
