Best Sundowner & Sunset Spots Near Somerset West

Easy viewpoints, beaches and wine-estate terraces for golden hour, each within 40 minutes of our door.

Our guests often ask us for the best sundowner spots Somerset West has to offer. The Helderberg gives you plenty of choice. You can sip a glass on a wine-estate terrace, walk onto a beach or stop at a lookout above False Bay. Sunset falls at around 19:00 in late October and closer to 20:00 at midsummer, so you have time for a drink after a day out. Below are six spots we send our own guests to, with drive times from our guesthouse.

Strand beach and promenade: the easiest sundowner spot in Somerset West

Strand is about 15 minutes from our door by car. The long beach and the promenade face False Bay, so you get wide, open sky at the end of the day. Walk the sand, then sit on a bench or at one of the restaurants along Beach Road. It suits families, because the beach is flat and the walk is short. For more beaches, read our guide to the best beaches near Somerset West.

Gordon's Bay harbour: best sunset views in the Helderberg for dinner

Gordon's Bay is about 28 minutes away, or 18 km, by the R44. Cape Town Tourism says the town has some of the best sunsets you will see, and the harbour is the place to watch with yachts and fishing boats in the foreground. Eat or drink by the water, then stroll along the harbour wall. Parking fills up on summer weekends, so come a little early.

Clarence Drive lookouts: sundowner spots for a drive

Clarence Drive (the R44 beyond Gordon's Bay) hugs the mountain above the sea and is often called one of the most scenic coastal roads in the world. Use the signed pull-offs, never stop on the road, and bring a jacket for the wind. The road is narrow and winding, so plan to drive back before it is fully dark. A flask of something warm, or a bottle from a nearby estate, makes it a very easy sundowner.

Kogel Bay and Dappat se Gat: a wild beach at golden hour

Kogel Bay is about 39 minutes away. It is a long, wild stretch of sand that feels far from the city. Come for the light, not for swimming: the sea is rough and the currents are strong. Our guide to the hidden beaches near Somerset West has directions and safety notes.

Wine-estate terraces for a sundowner in Somerset West

If you would like a glass in your hand, choose an estate with a view. Waterkloof, near Sir Lowry's Pass, is about 21 minutes away and has a restaurant overlooking False Bay. Idiom, about 32 minutes away, also has panoramic views, and Uva Mira looks towards Table Mountain and Cape Point. Check the opening hours first. Many estates close their tasting rooms in the late afternoon, and some restaurants only open for lunch or on certain days.

Our guide to the best wine estates in Somerset West has more estates. If you are returning from a day out, a stop at one of them also works well after our Franschhoek day trip. In spring, add an afternoon in the spring gardens first.

Sunset tip

Arrive 45 minutes before sunset. The light is warmest then, and you will find parking and a good table.

How to book a sundowner slot

Terraces and harbour restaurants fill up on warm evenings, especially from Friday to Sunday and in December and January. Book a table for the sunset hour, name the terrace or outside seating, and ask whether there is a minimum spend. Estates usually take bookings by phone, email or an online form. If you stay with us, we are happy to book for you and suggest the best day for the weather.
