Festive Season in Somerset West: Christmas & New Year Guide

Carols on the lawn, Christmas lunch, New Year's Eve and a day out in Stellenbosch: how to plan December in the Helderberg.

December is one of the nicest times to be in Somerset West. The days are long and warm, the estates are green, and the Helderberg slows down around Christmas. It is also busy, because South Africans and visitors from Europe both come for the summer holidays. If you are looking for things to do in Somerset West in December, this guide covers carols, Christmas and New Year's Eve dinners, what tends to be open or closed, and a day out in Stellenbosch. Dates change every year, so we say clearly where you should confirm before you go.

Carols by candlelight at Vergelegen: the local Christmas tradition

The Helderberg Hospice holds its Carols by Candlelight on the lawn at Vergelegen Wine Estate every December. It is the Christmas event most people in Somerset West mean when they talk about carols. The Hospice asks you to bring a picnic basket, chairs or a blanket, and a torch. The evening raises money for the Hospice, so it is a good cause as well as a pretty setting. We could not confirm the 2026 date or ticket price when we wrote this: the Hospice's own page shows a date in the second week of December without a year. Please phone the Hospice on 021 852 4608 before you plan around it. Vergelegen is only a short drive from us, so we are happy to help with directions.

Our events calendar is the running list of dated events near Somerset West. This page is the guest guide to the season itself, so use both together. If you would like to see the estate in daylight first, read our guide to the best wine estates in Somerset West.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day meals in Somerset West

Most of the Helderberg's restaurants either close on Christmas Day or serve a fixed-price Christmas lunch that you must book weeks ahead. In recent years, Christmas dining guides have listed set menus at Erinvale Estate Hotel and Spa, at Ghenwa's Culinary Club on Lourensford Wine Estate, at 3 Kitch3ns in Silver Forest, and a Christmas Eve dinner at the Lord Charles Hotel. Over the hills in Stellenbosch, Hazendal has also offered a festive lunch. We cannot promise that every venue repeats this in 2026, and prices change every year, so phone or email first and ask for the 2026 menu. Our guide to the best restaurants in Somerset West lists more places, and our breakfast and coffee guide helps with the morning after.

Book early

Christmas lunch tables and New Year's Eve dinners fill up well before December. If you stay with us, tell us your dates when you book and we will help you reserve a table.

New Year's Eve in Somerset West: dinners, beaches and fireworks

New Year's Eve in the Helderberg is mostly a dinner out, a drink on a terrace and a walk by the sea. We could not find a confirmed public fireworks display in Somerset West, Strand or Gordon's Bay for 31 December 2026, so please do not plan around one. Cape Town's big celebration has traditionally been at the V&A Waterfront. If you want that, check the Waterfront's website for 2026, allow a long drive in holiday traffic, and decide in advance how you will get home safely. Fireworks are also strictly regulated in the Cape Town area, so do not let off your own.

For something local, go to the sea. Strand's beachfront is about 15 minutes from our door and Gordon's Bay harbour is about 28 minutes away, and both are lovely in the long evening light. Our guide to sundowner spots near Somerset West has more places to watch the last sunset of the year, with drive times. Wine-estate restaurants and hotels often run a set-menu dinner on 31 December. Book as early as you can, ask whether there is a fixed price, and ask what time the kitchen closes.

A festive day in Stellenbosch, about 30 minutes away

Stellenbosch is a short drive from Somerset West (we measured about 30 minutes to Lanzerac Estate) and is known for wine-led events such as its Wine Town and street evenings. Whether a market, carol evening or street event falls in December changes from year to year, so check the town's tourism site for 2026 before you drive. Even without an event, the oak-lined streets, the old Cape Dutch buildings and the estates around the town make a good festive day out. Have lunch on an estate, walk the Dorp Street area, and be back before the evening traffic. Many estates are open between Christmas and New Year, but some close their tasting rooms on public holidays.

What is open and closed over Christmas and New Year

The public holidays this season are Christmas Day on Friday 25 December 2026, the Day of Goodwill on Saturday 26 December, and New Year's Day on Friday 1 January 2027. On those days, expect reduced hours in shops and malls, and many restaurants and tasting rooms closed or open by reservation only. Beaches, nature trails and viewpoints stay open. Plan ahead. Buy groceries before 24 December, fill the tank, and phone any restaurant before you set out. Opening times change every year and we have not verified every one, so use this as a guide and not a promise. If you are staying with us, ask on arrival and we will tell you what we know is open.

Quiet days between the holidays: ideas that work in December

The days between 26 December and New Year are a good time for easy outings. Spend a morning on the sand with our best beaches near Somerset West guide, or book a treatment from our list of places for a spa near Somerset West. Travelling with children? See things to do with kids in Somerset West. For a longer day out, our Franschhoek day trip works well in summer. If the weather turns, our rainy day ideas will help. Hermanus is also possible as a day trip, but whale season is mostly over by December.
