Half day
The Cape’s other wildlife is at sea: penguins at Stony Point and Boulders, seals off Seal Island, and southern right whales from June to November. A boat trip or a coastal drive makes an easy half day when you do not want hours in the car.

Driving times are our estimates and reserve programmes change, so check times, prices, age limits and what is included when you book. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Good to know
Choosing the right safari
The Western Cape is not the bushveld, and that is mostly good news.
The whole region is malaria free, so no tablets and no worries with children. The reserves are smaller than Kruger and the landscapes are Karoo and fynbos rather than bush, which means big skies, clear light and easy sightings, but not the same sense of wilderness.
For a Big 5 day trip, Aquila is the closest at about two and a quarter hours, so leave the villa early, because morning drives are the best for game viewing. Many lodges are made for overnight stays, and that works well from here: book a night or two at the reserve and then come back to the pool and the garden with us. The Garden Route reserves also fit nicely into a road trip along the coast.
With small children, start with Villiera: two hours, no predators and a wine tasting for the parents. Gondwana and Botlierskop have family lodges for longer stays, but check age limits for game drives when you book.
Bring a warm layer even in summer, because open vehicles are cold in the early morning and at sunset, and pack binoculars if you have them. If you would rather not drive, we can arrange a private trip with a driver.
