More fine dining near Somerset West

Ten more of our favourite restaurants in and around Stellenbosch, from award-winning tasting menus to long farm lunches under the oaks.

Our guide to fine dining in Somerset West only scratches the surface. Stellenbosch, a short drive from Villa Helderberg, has become one of the most exciting food towns in South Africa. Here are ten more restaurants we love. We start with special-occasion tasting menus, then long lunches on a farm, and finish with relaxed evenings in town.

Rust en Vrede Restaurant, Stellenbosch

Rust en Vrede: fine dining in a historic cellar

One of the Cape's most celebrated wine estates, Rust en Vrede has run its restaurant since 2007 in the estate's original 18th-century cellar, with whitewashed walls, yellowwood ceilings and vineyard views. Chef Fabio Daniel serves a contemporary French tasting menu shaped by his Brazilian and Italian roots, with an outstanding wine list and pairings to match. In 2026 it was named Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year at the Luxe Restaurant Awards, and it holds two Eat Out stars. It is open for dinner only, Tuesday to Saturday.

MERTIA restaurant on Bird Street, Stellenbosch

MERTIA: romance and precision in the heart of town

Named after owner Marais Kirsten-Uys's grandmother, MERTIA opened in December 2023 in a former bank building on Bird Street. Dark walls, glowing chandeliers and candlelight set the mood for chef Matt van den Berg's tasting menus, which play with South African nostalgia in refined, surprising ways. In 2026 MERTIA earned three Eat Out stars for the first time and won the Eat Out service excellence award for the second year running. This is the one we recommend for an anniversary or a big birthday.

Dining at Dusk restaurant, Stellenbosch

Dusk: a fine-dining speakeasy

Behind an unassuming door on Plein Street, Dusk seats only around 30 guests in a dark, intimate room where the spotlight falls on the plate. Chefs Darren Badenhorst and Callan Austin opened it in September 2022, and it was named Eat Out's Best New Restaurant that year. Expect a long, creative tasting menu built on local, seasonal produce, with a strong focus on fermentation and house-made preserves. Start with a cocktail at Nocturne, their bar next door.

Japanese cuisine at Hōseki, Delaire Graff Estate, Stellenbosch

Hōseki: Japanese cuisine at Delaire Graff

High on the Helshoogte Pass, Delaire Graff Estate is known for its art, views and luxury lodges. Its Japanese restaurant, Hōseki ("jewel" in Japanese), is led by head chef Virgil Kahn and earned its first Eat Out star in 2025. Order sushi, small plates and robata grill dishes à la carte, or leave it to the chef with the omakase set menu, with vegetables and herbs from the estate's own garden and greenhouse. Look up at the striking swallow installation, a symbol of good luck in Japan.

The Jordan Restaurant at Jordan Wine Estate, Stellenbosch

The Jordan Restaurant: farm-style dining in the Stellenbosch Kloof

On the family-run Jordan Wine Estate, The Jordan Restaurant has been one of the Winelands' signature chef restaurants since 2009. Today head chef Marthinus Ferreira, who has worked alongside Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal, cooks contemporary farm-style dishes that put seasonal produce from surrounding farms first, with views over the vineyards and mountains. Pair lunch with the estate's excellent wines, and book ahead, as a deposit secures your table.

Good to Gather on Rozendal Farm, Stellenbosch

Good to Gather: South Africa's most-loved restaurant

What started as a weekend pop-up in 2020 on biodynamic Rozendal Farm is now one of the hardest tables to book in the country. Diners voted Good to Gather the number one restaurant in South Africa in the Dineplan Reviewers' Choice Awards in both 2023 and 2024, and it holds two Eat Out stars. There is one sitting and a three-course sharing menu that changes every week. In summer you eat in the courtyard under the oaks, and in winter in the vinegar tasting room by the fire. Book well ahead and plan to stay all afternoon.

Lunch at The Table at De Meye, Stellenbosch

The Table at De Meye: lunch on the lawn

On the De Meye wine farm near Klapmuts, The Table serves an abundant three-course set lunch of country food, brought to the table family-style on antique platters. In summer each table gets its own tree on the lawn, and in winter you move inside next to the wood fires with views of the vineyards. The menu follows the seasons and local produce, and it has been a Dineplan Reviewers' Choice favourite for years. Lunch only.

Toevlug restaurant on Annandale wine farm, Stellenbosch

Toevlug: a family-friendly farm restaurant

Toevlug means "sanctuary" in Afrikaans, and that is exactly how it feels. Opened by celebrated chef Bertus Basson on the historic Annandale wine farm, with chef Drikus Brink in the kitchen, Toevlug serves relaxed, produce-driven South African food, from breakfast to lunches with sides made for sharing. Children can play outside and visit the small petting zoo while you finish your wine, which makes it a great choice for families. See our guide to things to do with kids for more family ideas.

Spek and Bone on Dorp Street, Stellenbosch

Spek & Bone: small plates under an old vine

Tucked behind a gate off Dorp Street, behind Oom Samie se Winkel, Spek & Bone is part of Bertus Basson's group. You sit in a courtyard under the oldest fruit-bearing vine in Stellenbosch and share bold, creative small plates, paired with small-production South African wines chosen from the wine wall. Don't skip the milk bread, and if you can't decide, the Chef's Menu is excellent value.

Steak at The Fat Butcher, Stellenbosch

Photo: The Fat Butcher

The Fat Butcher: a steakhouse for meat lovers

On the corner of Van Riebeeck and Drostdy Streets, among some of Stellenbosch's oldest buildings, The Fat Butcher is the town's go-to steakhouse. Choose from classic cuts, sharing cuts such as côte de boeuf, or signature steaks like the Grosvenor with foraged mushrooms and truffle, and enjoy the roasted bone marrow that comes with the steaks. There is a butchery on site, so you can take some meat home for a braai at the villa.

Before you book

The best tables in Stellenbosch book up weeks or even months ahead, especially in summer, so reserve as soon as your dates are set. Opening days, chefs and menus change with the seasons, so check each restaurant's own website. Most are 20 to 35 minutes' drive from Villa Helderberg. Please don't drink and drive; we are happy to help arrange a taxi or driver. Planning a special dinner? Get in touch and we will help you choose.
