Driving times are approximate. Swim where lifeguards are on duty, follow the flags and check conditions before you go, because the wind can turn a calm bay choppy within the hour. Beach tips from your hosts
False Bay is warmer than the Atlantic side, but the Cape has its own rules.
The water in False Bay is usually a few degrees warmer than at Camps Bay or Clifton on the Atlantic side, which is why we send most guests to Strand or Gordon’s Bay first. Even so, it is the Atlantic Ocean next door, so give yourself a moment to get used to it.
Mornings are calmer and the south-easter often picks up after lunch in summer, so plan beach time early and leave the afternoon for a wine estate or the pool. Sun protection matters more here than most visitors expect; the UV is high even on cloudy days.
If you want the famous Atlantic beaches, Camps Bay and Clifton are about 50 minutes away and pair well with a day in the city. We are happy to plan the route, or arrange a private day trip so nobody has to drive.
